Tip and Split Bill Calculator
Calculate an optional tip and each person's share of a bill. Keep sales tax, mandatory service charges and any additional tip separate so everyone can see how the total was calculated.
Each person's share
| Diner | Item subtotal share | Shared charges | Amount to pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total | |||
Remainder cents go to the largest fractional shares; ties go to diners in displayed order. Equal total shares differ by at most one cent.
How to use this tool
- Enter the receipt subtotal, tax and service charge.
- Choose a tip amount and whether it uses the pre-tax subtotal.
- Split equally or assign item amounts to each person.
How the result is calculated
The total adds the bill subtotal, tax, service charge and optional tip. An itemized split allocates shared charges using the method you select. A final cent adjustment keeps all shares equal to the receipt total.
Worked example
A $100 subtotal, $8 tax, $10 service charge and $20 optional tip total $138. Split equally among three people, each pays $46.
What this result does not cover
This tool does not decide whether you should tip or whether a service charge reaches staff. Check the receipt and ask the business if its policy is unclear.
Questions people ask
Should the tip include tax?
Choose the base you prefer; the calculator shows it explicitly.
Is a service charge a tip?
A compulsory service charge is different from a voluntary tip.
Why does one share differ by a cent?
That adjustment makes the individual shares add up exactly.
