Find which grocery pack gives you more for your money. Compare different sizes on the same unit basis, then account for coupons or food you expect to waste.

Compare on equal terms

Choose weight, liquid volume or count for the whole comparison. Fluid ounces measure volume, not weight. All volume units here are US liquid or metric, never Imperial.

Your grocery options

Price, coupon and tax refer to the entire purchase of all packs listed in that product. Quantity is the amount in one pack. Enter only a coupon you can redeem on this purchase.

Usable percentage = 100 − expected waste percentage. For example, 25% waste means 75% usable. A product with 0% usable quantity is not ranked on the usable basis.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter each pack's price, size and quantity.
  2. Choose compatible units and add any discount.
  3. Compare standard unit price or the cost of the amount you expect to use.

How the result is calculated

Unit price divides the effective pack price by its total quantity. The usable-quantity option reduces that quantity by the waste percentage you enter.

Worked example

A 16-ounce pack costing $4 and a 24-ounce pack costing $6 both cost $0.25 per ounce. If a quarter of the larger pack is wasted, its usable cost rises to about $0.33 per ounce.

What this result does not cover

The lowest unit price does not account for taste, quality, storage space or your cash budget. Weight and fluid-volume units are not interchangeable.
