Calculation breakdown
How to use this tool
- Enter the child's age and confirmed grant history.
- Add the planned contribution and available catch-up room.
- Review the basic grant estimate and remaining limits.
How the result is calculated
The basic grant is calculated on eligible contributions within annual and lifetime limits. Age and prior contribution history can affect eligibility.
Worked example
A $2,500 eligible contribution produces $500 at a 20% basic grant rate when enough annual and lifetime grant room remains.
What this result does not cover
Additional CESG, the Canada Learning Bond and provincial incentives are excluded from the initial version. Investment growth is an assumption, not a promised return.
Questions people ask
Can I catch up unused grant room?
Potentially, within the program's annual catch-up rules.
Are grants and contribution limits the same?
No. Track grant limits and RESP contribution limits separately.
Does a teenager always qualify?
Specific age and contribution-history conditions can apply.
Supported scope and official sources
2026 basic CESG only, including supported catch-up and age-16/17 checks. All RESP contributions and all CESG already received or pending must be reconciled across plans. Growth is an entered assumption.
