Social Security Earnings Test Calculator

Estimate whether earnings from work could reduce Social Security retirement payments before full retirement age. The calculator separates the standard annual test from the rule for the year you reach full retirement age.

Your benefit year

Work and retirement details

Enter your birth date to identify your full retirement age (FRA) month.

Earnings and benefits

Count qualifying gross wages and net self-employment earnings, not pensions or ordinary investment income. Enter the gross retirement benefit before Medicare premiums or tax withholding. Months default to all months before FRA in the selected year; reduce them if fewer benefits are otherwise payable.

Your inputs stay in this browser. This first version covers your own U.S. retirement benefit; foreign-work, disability and family-benefit calculations need SSA confirmation.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose the benefit year and enter your birth date.
  2. Enter work earnings, separating earnings before the full-retirement-age month when needed.
  3. Review possible withholding and the cases that need SSA confirmation.

How the result is calculated

The annual test applies different limits and deduction ratios depending on whether full retirement age occurs during the year. The earnings test stops from the month full retirement age is reached.

Worked example

Using an illustrative $20,000 limit, $24,000 of counted earnings creates a $4,000 excess. A $1-for-$2 rule would produce $2,000 of withholding before applying the available-benefit limit.

What this result does not cover

This is not a benefit-tax calculator or a final SSA payment schedule. Special first-year rules can change the result.
