Calculation breakdown
How to use this tool
- Select the province, purchase date and tax treatment.
- Enter the price before or after tax.
- Review each tax component and the final total.
How the result is calculated
The calculator applies the selected tax components to their supported bases. Reverse calculations remove the combined tax multiplier for the chosen scenario.
Worked example
In an illustrative province with 5% GST and 7% PST on the same base, a $100 taxable purchase totals $112. These example rates are not a substitute for selecting the correct province.
What this result does not cover
Taxability depends on the item and place-of-supply rules. This tool does not decide whether a business must register or whether a particular exemption applies.
Questions people ask
Is exempt the same as zero-rated?
No. Both may charge zero tax to the customer, but their tax treatment differs.
Can I remove tax from a receipt total?
Yes, for a supported scenario with the correct tax components.
Why might a receipt differ by a cent?
Merchants may round individual lines or components differently.
Supported scope and official sources
2025–2026 standard-rate goods with the same confirmed tax treatment for all components and shipping. Nova Scotia HST changes on 1 April 2025. Mixed-tax receipts, vehicles, partial rebates and special services are unsupported.
