How the W-4 adjustment estimate works

The calculator projects 2026 federal income tax from expected wages, other income, deductions and credits, subtracts withholding already paid, and divides the remaining target across remaining paychecks.

Form W-4 mapping

  • Step 3 reduces annual withholding for estimated credits.
  • Step 4(a) adds other income.
  • Step 4(b) supplies an annual deductions estimate.
  • Step 4(c) requests extra withholding per paycheck.

This planning estimate does not replace the official IRS Tax Withholding Estimator or Form W-4 instructions.
