Materials and installed-cost planning

Flooring Calculator

Estimate purchase quantities and costs from net floor area, layout waste and your product's actual package coverage.

Area, product and costs

Apply the entered tax rate to

Enter net area before waste; add rectangular sections and subtract areas not receiving flooring. Presets are editable examples, not manufacturer requirements. Selecting a preset changes only waste, preserving your product coverage and prices. Combine material and layout considerations by entering the waste percentage your installer recommends; preset percentages are not added together.

Use actual coverage per box or per individual plank/tile. For a rectangular piece, coverage in ft² = length in inches × width in inches / 144. Select boxes when the supplier sells only full boxes. Area-only purchasing rounds up to 0.01 ft²; it does not determine carpet roll widths, seams or pattern matching.

Material cost uses purchased coverage, including packaging overage. Underlayment and labor rates apply to net floor area; underlayment roll/package rounding and extra waste are not modeled. Use 0 when not needed or included in another price. Tax rate and taxable categories are your inputs, not a location-based tax determination.

Inputs stay in your browser and are not saved.

How flooring quantities are calculated

Required area = net area × (1 + waste / 100). Boxes or pieces = required area / coverage per unit, rounded up to the next whole unit. Purchased area = rounded unit count × unit coverage. Area-only mode instead rounds required area upward to the next 0.01 ft².

Material cost = purchased area × cost per ft². Underlayment and labor each use net area × their rate. Each cost line rounds to cents, then tax is calculated on the selected rounded cost lines. Total = material + underlayment + labor + delivery + tax. Purchase quantities use exact decimal arithmetic to avoid an extra box at an exact coverage boundary.

Waste and layout

The illustrative presets use 10% for straight lay, tile, carpet, vinyl plank and hardwood; 15% for diagonal lay; and 20% for herringbone. Actual waste depends on room geometry, direction, product dimensions, repeat patterns, defects and spare-stock needs. Override these values for your material and layout. The calculator does not optimize cuts or prove that a particular quantity will fit a layout.
