US Sales Tax Calculator — Add, Remove and ZIP Lookup

Add or remove sales tax using a confirmed combined jurisdiction rate, with separate product and shipping taxability assumptions. A configured rate provider can retrieve a ZIP-based estimate and show its source and jurisdiction. ZIP codes can cross tax boundaries, so an address-level compliance service is still needed for actual collection decisions.

ZIP lookup requires a configured rate provider. Manual-rate calculations remain available; no guessed rates are used.

How the estimate works

For add-tax mode, multiply taxable merchandise and taxable shipping by the combined rate. For remove-tax mode, divide each taxable tax-inclusive component by one plus the rate. Never infer current jurisdiction rates from a static state average.

Worked example

At 8.25%, $100 taxable merchandise plus $10 nontaxable shipping costs $118.25. The tax is $8.25.

Questions and answers

Can a ZIP code identify my exact sales tax?

Not always. ZIP codes can cross jurisdictions; product, shipping and address rules can change the amount due.

What if provider lookup is unavailable?

Enter a rate confirmed by your state or a tax provider. The calculator will label it as a user-entered rate and will not claim a successful ZIP lookup.
