How trip gas cost is calculated

Trip miles = one-way distance × 2 when round trip is selected. Each vehicle's fuel = trip miles / MPG. Each vehicle's cost = unrounded fuel × its price per US gallon, rounded to cents. Total cost adds the rounded vehicle costs. Cost per person divides that total by the number of people sharing it.

Displayed gallons round to three decimals; cost calculations use unrounded fuel. Fuel prices accept three decimals, such as 3.499. When a bill cannot split evenly into cents, the result shows how many people pay one cent more so the shares add up exactly.
