Answer-first introduction

To calculate semester GPA, convert each course result to the correct grade point, multiply the grade point by the course credit hours, add all quality points and divide by the total GPA credit hours. The most important step is using the grading scale and course rules of your institution.

Step 1 — Find the correct grade point

Use the official grading scale. Do not assume that 80% always equals the same grade point. Relative grading and department-specific policies can make percentage-only conversion impossible before official grades are issued.

Step 2 — Calculate quality points

For every course: quality points = grade point × credit hours

Example: a grade point of 3.30 in a three-credit course produces 9.90 quality points.

Step 3 — Add quality points and credits

Add the quality points for all included courses. Separately add their GPA credit hours. Exclude a course only when the academic policy says it does not count.

Step 4 — Divide

semester GPA = total quality points ÷ total GPA credit hours Round only at the end unless the official policy specifies otherwise.

Complete worked example

Course Credits Grade point Quality points Programming 4 3.70 14.80 Calculus 3 3.30 9.90 Communication 2 4.00 8.00 Lab 1 3.00 3.00 Total quality points: 35.70 Total credits: 10 35.70 ÷ 10 = 3.57 The semester GPA is 3.57.

Common mistakes

  • Averaging course grade points without credit weighting
  • Using an unofficial marks-to-GPA conversion
  • Rounding each course too early
  • Including non-GPA courses incorrectly
  • Ignoring repeated or failed-course policy
  • Mixing scales

FAQs

Can I calculate GPA without credit hours?

Only if every included course is weighted equally under the relevant system.

Should I use obtained marks or the final letter grade?

Use the official grade point where available. Marks require a verified conversion scale.

Do labs count separately?

They do when listed with separate credits and grades under the policy.
