GPA vs CGPA: What Is the Difference?
Learn the difference between semester GPA and cumulative CGPA, how credit weighting works and which Toolistify calculator to use.
Answer-first introduction
GPA usually describes academic performance for one semester or defined period, while CGPA combines performance across multiple semesters or the entire program. Both are commonly credit-weighted: courses or semesters with more credits contribute more to the result. Exact terminology and rules can differ by institution.
GPA in one sentence
A semester GPA is the total quality points earned in the semester divided by the GPA credit hours attempted in that semester. GPA = semester quality points ÷ semester GPA credits
CGPA in one sentence
CGPA is the cumulative total of quality points divided by cumulative GPA credit hours. CGPA = cumulative quality points ÷ cumulative GPA credits When only semester GPAs are available, use a credit-weighted average rather than a simple average.

Why a simple average can be wrong
Suppose Semester 1 has a GPA of 3.0 across 12 credits and Semester 2 has a GPA of 4.0 across 18 credits. A simple average gives 3.50, but the credit-weighted calculation is: (3.0 × 12 + 4.0 × 18) ÷ 30 = 3.60 The second semester has a greater effect because it contains more credits.
Can GPA or CGPA be converted to percentage?
There is no universal conversion. Use only the official formula published by the institution, employer, scholarship provider or evaluation body requesting the percentage. A generic multiplier can produce a misleading result.
